  1. In the Roman Catholic church, the highest
  2. rank next to the pope. Cardinals act as an
  3. advisory body to the pope and elect him.
  4. Their red hat is the badge of office. The
  5. number of cardinals has varied; there were
  6. 151 in 1989.
  7. Originally a cardinal was any priest in
  8. charge of a major parish, but in 1567 the
  9. term was confined to the members of the
  10. Sacred College, 120 of whom (below the age of
  11. 80) elect the pope and are themselves elected
  12. by him (since 1973). They advise on all
  13. matters of doctrine, canonizations,
  14. convocation of councils, liturgy, and
  15. temporal business.
